About San Juan Basillica

The Church’s Origins

The devotion spread to the United States, when in 1949 Reverend Jose Maria Azpiazu of the San Juan, Texas parish was granted authorization to promote a devotion to Our Lady of San Juan. The Reverend commissioned a replica of the revered statue that was based on the original piece that was housed at San Juan de Los Lagos and installed it in the San Juan Chapel.

The Church Lawn

How often do we sit out on the lawn and enjoy each other’s company any more? Hardly ever. That’s why the Gaines’ wanted to change that reality with a sweet, open field lawn for the kids to play and the parents to picnic.

Plane Crash Miracle

In 1954, a brand-new church and shrine were constructed and dedicated to the Virgin of San Juan. Sixteen years later, a tiny jet crashed into the shrine’s ceiling and detonated, demolishing it, while a Mass was being attended by 50 parishioners, 50 priests, and 100 schoolchildren in the church cafeteria. Surprisingly, no one other than the pilot perished in the fire, and the sacrament and statue were saved from the blaze.

It’s a Basilica

The reconstructed shrine has gained renown on a global scale today, and Pope John Paul II gave it the title of Basilica in 1999.
